Greetings to all you studio burrowers. Spring is here and it's
time to get out of your studio hole and get some sun, but until then welcome
to Tape Op E-Zine #9!
In this e-zine:
1. Pro Tools users: Win a Sound Toys Echo Boy Plug-in!!
2. Buy a $1000 microphone from Full Compass and get a free ATLAS Boom stand
worth over $200!
3. Tape Op Conference in Tucson, AZ!
4. Archive, and Privacy Policy
5. Gratuitous exclamation marks!!!!
*************************************************************************
1. Pro Tools folks: One thing we overlooked in last issue's reader's survey
is how many of you use PT LE (including the MPowered version) and how many
of you are TDM/HD users.
We'd really appreciate it if you Pro Tools users could help us out with one
more VERY SHORT survey - one question. We'll be giving away two Sound Toys
Echo Boy plug-ins to two of you for helping us out.
The Sound Toys plug-ins and Echoboy in particular are super cool plugs.
Company founder and programmer Ken Bogdanowicz was one of the folks working
on some of the early Eventide hardware effects and has deep roots in analog
recording. The Sound Toys plug-ins reflect the company's striving for analog
sonic performance right down to the cool 'wood' framing of the graphics.

This offer expires April 15, so don't wait until the last week to do your
taxes and register for this offer!

2. Get a free Atlas Sound SB36W Boom Stand if you buy a mic from Full
Compass valued at $1000 or more. These stands retail for $290 and this is an
exclusive offer to Tape Op readers!!!
If you're gonna buy a mic worth $1000 or more, you need a really good stand
for it, right?
These mic stands are great, they'll hold even a very heavy microphone over
the middle of a drum set no problem. They've also got wheels so you can roll
them around the studio. And finally, if you have one of these stands you can
hang your vocal mics upside down from them like all those cool photos of
Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin singing into U-47's and RCA 44's. Make
your vocalists feel like Frank and Aretha and you'll get better takes,
right?

I've been expanding my free mp3 offerings at Zanteson -> net label
adding a lot of Zanoisect releases (40 or more) to sonicsquirrel.net
that's a funny site... takes a moment to figure out the geeky
interface, but I like the random streaming options as well as the fact
you can download a whole series of releases at a time if you wish.
Soon 1/2 of all Zanoisect releases will be available for free mp3
listening- I'm looking forward to your opinions.
I'm also nearing a new website overhaul.

+ staubgold 65 Hassle Hound - Limelight Cordial cd/lp
Hassle Hound are a benign tornado, roaring and twisting through the best
and most eclectic of record collections, ripping out and tearing off
ideas and samples. They plunder for a reason ? to make fragile and
lovely music, often charmingly odd but with a gleeful melancholy,
off-kilter but on the ball. There is a childlike quality to their music,
but the child in question must be a musical prodigy with a wry sense of
humour and a maturity beyond his years.
They are not afraid to be beautiful. Machines and beats are caressed
into soft humanity by delicate vocals, the boisterous cuddle of
eccentrically played instruments and ingenious guitar patterns. Here are
wistful love songs which also sound like the greatest James Bond theme
ever (if those films had ever been made by a 60's new wave Czech
director). Cartoon oneirics slapstick their way across lush countryside
and toddle through town, favourite-uncle drunk and beaming expansively.
Trying to pin them down is like drinking beer with a fork. They coin new
genres like other bands do sound checks ? too much funky not enough,
crofter dub, genial noise, surf and turf guitar, carousel gothic,
collagetronica. If Harry Partch had made music for ice-cream vans it
might have been like some of these affable inventions.
Hassle Hound are...
Ela Orleans (vocals, violin, guitar, keyboards, toy instruments):
Born in Poland. Since 2004 she has lived in Brooklyn (New York). Ela is
taking part in several improv/psychedelic/freakout music projects in NYC
("Ozone Swimmers", "3i's", "Franklin's Mint")
Tony Swain (guitar, bass, samples, loops, keyboards):
Tony is a painter represented by The Modern Institute Glasgow
(http://www.themoderninstitute.com/artists/t_swain/index.shtml) who also
performs with ambivalent obscurists, "Dreghorn".
Mark Vernon (computer, samples, loops, keyboards):
Mark is a radio producer based in Glasgow, additionally he records and
performs as half of the duo "Vernon & Burns" whose debut album was
released on Gagarin Records in 2005
(http://www.gagarinrecords.com/artists/vernonandburns/).

+ staubgold 64 Kammerflimmer Kollektief - Remixed Part 2 12"
This is the second part in a series of two remix 12"es featuring four
superb mixes again, done by SUTEKH, SECONDO, LUMP200 and RADIAN.
"If only to offer the world another opportunity to recall the
Kammerflimmer Kollektief translates as Shimmering Collective, Staubgold
has brought out the second of two 12"s containing specially commissioned
remixes of tracks from the group's 2005 'Absencen' album. First time
around, Jan Jelinek, Aoki Takamasa, Nôze and David Last stepped up to
theplate. Now it's the turn of Sutekh, who makes a great job of setting
Christopher Brunner's elegant vibraphone amid some slinky 303 runs;
Radovan Scasascia under his Secondo alias, cutting 'Unstet' down to a
series of screeches, scrawls and impacts; Lump200, having bouncy
carefree fun with an echoing steel guitar on 'Nachtwache'; and Radian,
who go all tense and spooky stretching out 'Equilibrium' till it can't
take no more."
(Ken Hollings, The Wire, http://www.thewire.co.uk)
SUTEKH:
Sutekh is renowned the world over for his fresh approach to electronic
production: as US tech-funk goes, he?s your man, with releases on labels
including Soul Jazz (UK), Force Inc/Mille Plateaux (Germany), Orthlorng
Musork (USA), and his own Context Free Media label, among others. He has
released three very distinct long players, and is currently putting the
finishing touches to a fourth, due for release in 2006.
http://context.fm/artists_sutekh.html
SECONDO:
Swiss born electronic musician Radovan Scasascia founded Dreck-Records
with his long-time collaborator Laurent Benner in 2000 and has been
releasing music under the names Secondo and AM/PM. Departing from
existing popular songs of various origins, Secondo cuts his source
material carefully into minute fragments in order to compose entirely
new pieces of music - somehow maintainig the atmosphere of the original,
but shifting away from it structurally and rhythmically. His works are
available on Dreck-Records (distributed by Kompakt) and Soul Jazz
Records.
http://www.dreck-records.com
LUMP200:
Uniquely effective and contrary, the music of Lump200 has a way of going
absolutely nowhere in a way that still keeps you involved, bearing
repeated listening. It willfully fucks around with dancefloor music
formats and sound snippets from all styles, letting the machines do the
talking. And boy, do they blabber off. Lump200 feeds them with samples,
filtering the world of sound through his thirtysomething (y)ears that
include training in multiple instruments and a solid new jazz
background, composing and performing with writers for stage plays and
radio work. He currently releases for the Swiss Mental Groove label.
http://aredee.ch/aredee.html
RADIAN:
The Austrian trio Radian is a post-rock/electronic group who uses both
acoustic and electronic instruments. The group's members often play even
their acoustic instruments in such a rhythmically precise manner that
Radian sounds more like an electronic act than a band. Radian (bassist
John Norman, drummer Martin Brandlmayr and synth player Stefan Németh)
formed in Vienna in 1996. The group's first full album, "TG11", was
released by Rhiz and Mego in 2000. Since 2002 Radian team up with
Chicago producer John McEntire (Tortoise), and the Thrill Jockey label
released the resulting full-lengths "rec.extern" (2002) and
"Juxtaposition" (2004).

Flint Glass / Nyarlathotep
Release date: March 6th 2006
On Funkwelten and Brume records
www.funkwelten.de -
Brume records
The new album called "Nyarlathotep" comes presented in a special fold out 8
page 3-pac digipak designed by Eyelyft and presents 19 new tracks with a
total running time of over 72 minutes including Remixes from AH CAMA SOTZ,
EMPUSAE & THIS MORN'OMINA, XABEC and DISHARMONY !
"Nyarlathotep" showcases a slightly more melodic, sad and obscure side of
Flint Glass while still keeping the cold and dark atmospheres that defines
its sound. Heavily inspired by the Horror / Satanic writings of H.P
Lovecraft novels, coldness and warmth are constantly fighting for
predominance and the quasi-total absence of vocals makes it an extremely
visionary record which would be a perfect match for a number of horror movie
soundtracks varying from post apocalyptic to foggy northern woods, from
lunar landscapes to horror aberrations.
Flint Glass + Telepherique / Information Gigabit

Ubeboet - Red and Black Remixes
Ubeboet (m.a.tolosa) invited 4 artists to remix his excellent album "black and red" which
was released by earlabs.org in 2005. The original work featured field recordings, radio and
turntables. Here each artist-Asher, Arturas Bumsteinas, Mathieu Ruhlman, Dead Letters
Spell Out Dead Words-picked one track and deconstructed it to create a new work.
m.a.tolosa also runs the fine con-v label. Download it now:

Recordings from Australia. All available in the shop while supplies last.

From the Slave Indvstries Collective and 9.38khz:
Amor Antiquita - "Maestro's Medley"
9.38006kHz / SI022
Following closely on the heels of increasingly successful releases
on labels such as 8bitpeoples, Illmatik Vibes, and Experimedia, Amor
Antiquita now brings his love of electronic music and all things
antiquated to 9.38kHz. AA draws from the cold synthesis of Berlin,
the warm grooves of his home in Detroit, and the zany game melodies
of Tokyo to forge a style all his own, showcased here in the form of
a career-spanning 6-song EP. Some of these tracks are only months
old-- others have been lurking in the Maestro's archives, waiting to
be released. Finding no other home, these odds and ends discover
common ground here as "Maestro's Medley," which has graciously been
provided for free download at the artist's request.
Click on the song titles in the graphic above to get the mp3s. Click
on the lefthand cover to get a .zip file with the print-quality CD
artwork and two excellent vintage-styled promo ads for the release.
If you're so inclined, you can also purchase a physical 3" CDR copy
of the release for $5 from 9.38kHz Records by clicking on
the "ORDER" button below. Whichever way you choose to
experience "Maestro's Medley," be sure to take a listen to this
rising star of the electronic scene!
Released on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2006.

i. + Hive Records is pleased to announce two new signings -
Scrap.edx and The Liar's Rosebush! Hive will be releasing
Collect:Erase, a collaborative CD from these two artists on October
31st. Expect to hear new material that surpasses in complexity,
creativity and intensity anything that either act has released
before. We are extremely proud to be working with these two amazing
artists.
ii + New Releases - Out October 31st: Scrap.edx / Liar's Rosebush -
Collect:Erase. A collaborative effort between these two amazing
artists, Collect:Erase focuses on two concepts and is expressed
musically through four tracks each of all new material from the
above two acts. each of the four tracks examines an abstract idea
and is interconnected to it's parent concept and peer tracks
philosophically. to confuse the listener further the sample pools
from each act were then traded and three remixes were constructed
using the two concepts as inspiration. these remixes were then given
to two remixes (duran duran duran and iszoloscope) and third order
remixes were constructed. the end result is thirteen all new tracks
of complex, aggressive electronic music.
the collect and erase tracks range in style (jumping from genre to
genre and back again) although the complexity and attention to
detail in the programming of these songs stands out as the best
public offering of these two acts to date. mastering and engineering
was completed in house by the liar's rosebush. the cd design layout
concept was created by 8th circuit (metawerks studio). Check out
soundclips on the Hive website.
+ October 31st also sees the release of Hive's first DVD! Pneumatic
Detach's [e·vis·cer·ate] is all the intensity of Pneumatic Detach
made visual. Frightening and visually stunning, this DVD features 9
new studio videos produced by the amazing Brien Hindman, and live
videos from their US tours in 2004/2005, as well as hidden tracks,
behind-the-scenes footage, and more. Never before has more
production value been brought to visuals in the underground harsh
electronics scene. Highly recommended viewing for fans with a
nightmare dificiency. This isnt your standard boring live DVD - the
artistry and talent in the studio videos, as well as the intensity
of PD's renowned live performances, make this a DVD even non-DVD
collectors will enjoy. Check out clips from the DVD @ the Hive
Website - http://www.hiverecords.com/
Both releases are available for preorder now!
iii. + The Hive website has been updated with info about the new
Scrap.edx / Liar's Rosebush release, the Pneumatic Detach DVD
release, a list of live shows, new interviews, reviews, ordering,
sounds, and video section. Check it out - http://www.hiverecords.com
iv. + New Reviews of Leaf's Made Into Itself -
"...Forged out of haunting, gawking-out-windows-at-the-rain
solitude, Made Into Itself is deeply personal, defying any easy,
dismissive labeling as soundtrack. It will remind electro-fans of
the more lighter passages of Noise Unit - in terms of sequencer
prowess it falls somewhere between that and anything in the Warp
Records stable that has a few loose ends - but there's something
Spike Lee about it all that harnesses big-city isolation and makes
it somehow less angst-inducing..."
"...Energized by encrusted, rope-a-dope beats and deepened by
mournful string atmospheres, Leaf's gritty, hour-long travelogue
Made Into Itself weaves through narcotized lairs and night-time
urban zones. Though faint traces of folktronica, dancehall, and
drum'n'bass occasionally surface, Leaf's primary focus is smoked-out
and blunted instrumental hip-hop..."
"...the album contains 15 titles, all successes delivering the same
kind of atmosphere: downtempo instrumental hip-hop, in which the
acoustic instruments bring a certain light with absolutely
marvellous melodies and sonorities. The sampling holds of course a
significant part in this album, and will cause perhaps comparison
with DJ Shadow (which, by the way, is not a detriment), by mixing
many types of sounds, influencing their rythmic core: irish folk,
chinese mandoline, the songs of whales, and other marks of
traditional music as on Even Holy Things Die, or the chords of His
Whole Life..."
+ New Reviews of Pneumatic Detach's [vis·cer·a]
v. + A new interview with Pneumatic Detach, and an older one with
Censor, appear on the Hive Records "press" page.
vii. + Hive Records' "Shattered F*cking Beats" tshirts are sold out.
There are a few Suspicious Records "Anxious Urban Prophesy" shirts
left. Check the Hive website for ordering.

Once we have released 50 cds and 50 vinyls sometime mid 2006, we will stop releasing new material.
We have many reasons for this, in the interest of briefness we will just say that its time to
move on. After we have completed 100 total releases (currently at 81) we will sell off our
remaining stock and there will be no more represses.
We thank ALL the people who have supported us over the years, you have made this possible.

a full-length CD (76:54) with new dark earplays, now for the first time available!
All material on ‘Madadayo’ was processed with original sounds from the rich Exart-archives.
This joint venture between Exart and EE Tapes gradually evolved into a rather emotional
finale for both parties:
First Hessel had to deal with the death of his second daughter Angel (Engel), causing long
depressed periods, and while composing and producing this work, from its earliest concept to
the final production in December of 2004, both Hessel and Eriek of EE Tapes lost their dear
mother and fathers, leading eventually to the birth of this dark ambient masterpiece full
of melancholy and contemplation.
The concept of Hessel, Eriek and Marcel is a statue for all the dear ones who died.
Track-list selected and compiled by EE Tapes out of many hours of quality music.
Cover by comic artist Marcel Herms (mherms@home.nl) whom we wish to thank a lot for
his great ideas and fine art!

TAPE OP RADIO
We're super excited about Tape Op Radio, a streaming Internet music player
we just added to our website. This way you can go online and hear the music
we have been writing about, especially when it's stuff that is on small
labels or self released. All the stuff on Tape Op Radio is either someone
we've interviewed, recorded by someone we've interviewed, recorded by or
featuring someone who is a major contributor to the mag, from a CD we
"reviewed" that I liked, or from the Tape Op Compilation CD that we will
eventually have back in stock, through oEbase http://www.oebase.com (the hosts
for our player) for sale. The only downside is you need better-than-dialup
Internet service to use it and the sound is less than MP3 quality, but it's
a great way to hear new music and get turned on to some of the great stuff
we write about.
